By IRL Science Festival August 28, 2024

The Indian River Lagoon Science Festival returns for its ninth year on Saturday, October 26, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Veteran’s Memorial Park, part of the River Walk Center in Fort Pierce. This FREE day of discovery promises to be a blast for the whole family with dozens of hands-on and minds-on activities exploring the wonders of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM). The Indian River Lagoon Science Festival showcases the important role of science and how fun it can be, as well as the many amazing resources and organizations throughout our region.

Just a few of the exhibitors that participants can enjoy this year include:

  • Control underwater remotely operated vehicles with the Smithsonian Marine Station
  • Explore a real Marine Mammal Ambulance with Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute
  • Experience the "World of Away" Eco-Art Exhibit with the Oxbow Eco-Center
  • Spend the day in the life of a sea turtle scientist with Ecological Associates, Inc.
  • Explore Fort Pierce Police Department’s Crime Scene Investigation van to learn about forensic science
  • Enjoy explosive science stage shows with Mad Science of Palm Beach
  • Learn how to recycle right with St Lucie County Solid Waste
  • Get up close and personal with the animals of Treasure Coast Wildlife Center
  • Fight the bite while learning about entomology with St. Lucie County Mosquito Control

Exhibitor registration is now open online at irlsciencefest.org/host-an-exhibit for organizations wishing to participate- a hands-on science, technology, engineering, art, or math activity is required! Volunteers are also needed to help on event day - anyone 16 or older can register at irlsciencefest.org/be-a-volunteer.

A variety of food trucks will be on-site to satisfy the hunger of festival-goers and free parking will be available in the downtown Fort Pierce Parking Garage with free trolley transport to the festival site.

The IRL Science Festival has been made possible through funding from the Smithsonian Marine Station and Bill and Clare Bohnett, as well as the generous support of St. Lucie County, the City of Fort Pierce, Mad Science of Palm Beach, and Treasure Coast Almanac.

About the Indian River Lagoon Science Festival

Established in 2014, the IRL Science Festival aims to demonstrate that science is meaningful and fun, to make science accessible to all residents of the Treasure Coast, and to highlight STEAM resources in the IRL region. The festival planning committee is made up of volunteer organizers from local governments and research, education and non-profit organizations, and administrative support is largely provided by the Smithsonian Marine Station. A member of the Science Festival Alliance (www.sciencefestivals.org) since 2013, the IRL Science Festival serves as a leader in promoting science and science festivals across the state of Florida.
