Florida Oceanographic Society is excited to host "Estuaries Day" on Saturday, September 30, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Coastal Center. The event is designed to be a day of educational and entertaining activities that highlight the importance of these vital coastal habitats. Visit the Coastal Center to celebrate the remarkable beauty and significance of estuaries and learn about one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on our planet.
The day’s events will include educator-led trail walks to the Indian River Lagoon, demonstrations highlighting our oyster restoration efforts and the importance of water quality in our estuary habitats, and an ethical angling demonstration designed to test guests’ knowledge of fish species and ethical catch and release techniques.
“This is an opportunity to connect with nature and learn about the vital role of estuaries,” says Executive Director & CEO, Mark Perry. “We’ll have fun, educational activities that promote our waterways and their essential role in our coastal ecosystems.” Mr. Perry will also be hosting a special presentation on the challenges facing our estuaries and our advocacy efforts to protect them.
In addition, guests can look forward to a screening of Emerald Sanctuary, an award-winning documentary that delves into the importance of seagrass and the challenges facing this foundational species, as well as exhibitor booths from partnering conservation organizations including Audubon of Martin County, IFAS/Sea Grant, Florida Native Plant Society, FWC, One Lagoon and River Kidz, food, and activities for kids.
All event activities are included in the admission price to the Coastal Center on September 30th. Tickets can be purchased online in advance at www.floridaocean.org, or on the day of the event.
