Discover Martin County’s History During National Preservation Month

Each year, the Martin County Board of County Commissioners observes May as Historic Preservation Month. This year Historic Preservation Month in Martin County is dedicated to Alice Luckhardt, a local historian and author who is remembered for her lifelong preservation work. Planned events begin with a free kick-off reception Monday, May 1, 2023 at 5:30 PM at the Stuart Heritage Museum.

This May marks the Martin County Historic Preservation Board’s fourteenth year joining forces with other local organizations to promote the importance of preserving historical places and providing public education about Martin County's historic treasures. The scheduled events are a fun way for the community to celebrate special places and people that have made Martin County so unique. Visit www.martin.fl.us/historicpreservation for a full list of events and activities taking place throughout the month of May.

From a juried art show to tours of historic landmarks and reenactments with living history lessons, the events are sure to engage residents of all ages. Additionally, the Historic Preservationist of the Year Award Reception at the Elliott Museum on May 18th at 5:00 PM honoring Lloyd Jones, founding Chair of Martin County Black Heritage Initiatives, is an event not to be missed!
