Dr. John D. Millay Sworn Into Office
As First Appointed Superintendent Of Schools
Dr. John D. Millay was sworn into office as the Martin County School District's twelfth Superintendent of Schools this evening. Succeeding former superintendent Laurie J. Gaylord, who retired on Monday after serving two elected terms, Dr. Millay has taken office as the first appointed superintendent in the history of the District.
In November 2018, Martin County voters passed a referendum granting the Martin County School Board the authority to appoint the Superintendent of Schools. After a year-long search process, which involved many opportunities for community members to provide their input and feedback, Dr. Millay was selected by the School Board in September for the position.
Dr. Millay comes to Martin County from Kentucky, where he recently retired after a 27-year career serving children and public schools. He spent the last seven years as Superintendent of the Meade County School District, and has also served as an adjunct professor for both the University of Louisville and Western Kentucky University. In 2019, he was presented with the “Best Practice Award” by the Kentucky Department of Education’s Office of Learning and Continuous Improvement for his work in implementing models for special education and professional development. He has served as a superintendent mentor for the Kentucky Department of Education, and was selected to present to the National School Boards Association this year on the development of student pathways and community/college partnerships. He holds undergraduate degrees in Elementary Education (K-6) and Special Education (K-12), a Master’s degree in Elementary Education and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration (K-12).
"I'm very humbled and honored to be the twelfth superintendent of the Martin County School District," Dr. Millay shared. "I am very thankful to the School Board for this opportunity, and I look forward to working with our faculty and staff to continue our mission of educating all students for success. I am continuously asked what is important to me and what the next steps might be- in education, the answer is relationships. It has been said that no effective learning can occur without effective relationships, so I want to call on both our school district and community to remain united in our work for the benefit of our children. I want to challenge everyone to keep trying be their very best for each other and our school district."
Marsha Powers (District 2) and Michael DiTerlizzi (District 5) were also sworn into office to begin their third elected terms as School Board Members today. During its annual reorganization meeting held this afternoon, the School Board selected Marsha Powers (District 2) to serve as School Board Chair and Tony Anderson (District 4) to serve as School Board Vice-Chair for the second consecutive year.
