Kiplinger Nature Preserve provides a perfect backdrop for our explorations and discussion of Ethnobotany, a nature hike, on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 10:00 AM. The preserve encompasses over 150 acres of sand pine/scrub oak, pine flatwoods, freshwater wetlands, and mangrove dominated tidal swamp. Here we will discover how people of long ago not only survived but thrived in what many consider to be a harsh environment. Participants can register for the walk by sending an email to ecosystem@martin.fl.us.
Ethnobotany focuses on the interaction between plants and human beings. Florida has a long history of people who forged a living from what the land provided, using plant products for food, shelter, tools, artistic creations and ceremonies. On this hike we'll discuss Florida's first people, the Seminoles who arrived in Florida in the 1700's and Florida's early pioneers. These diverse groups had more in common than you might think.
Kiplinger Preserve is located at 4146 S Kanner Highway, just south of Veteran's Memorial Bridge in Stuart. Participants should meet at the Kiplinger Nature Preserve sign shortly before 10:00 AM to sign a waiver. Hikers should wear closed toe shoes that can get wet and/or muddy, wear a hat, sunscreen and bring water to drink. There are no restroom facilities at Kiplinger Nature Preserve.
