Treasure Coast Food Bank's Canstruction® at Treasure Coast Mall 10/13

Competition to build structures out of canned food will feed hungry Treasure Coast residents

October 10, 2014
Teams of students and professionals will soon be competing to design and build structures created completely out of canned goods. The international competition, called Canstruction®, is an opportunity to not only win an award from the most widely known food drive event in the world, but more importantly, it is a way for these groups to have a direct impact on feeding the hungry right here on the Treasure Coast.

The teams - composed of builders, contractors and students - will be creating their giant structures made entirely from canned goods and other food items at the Treasure Coast Square Mall in Jensen Beach on October 13. At the close of the event on October 25th, all of the food from the competition will be donated to the Treasure Coast Food Bank.

The Treasure Coast Food Bank is joined by more than 100 cities around the world coordinating Canstruction® competitions. Highlighting the creativity and compassion of these teams that come together for the competition, these astounding structures are helping to change the world by collecting millions of pounds of food for local food banks and raising awareness about the issue of hunger. On a weekly basis, the Treasure Coast Food Bank serves over 100,000 individuals that are struggling to put food on their table, to include nearly 35,000 children and 12,000 seniors.

“Last year was the first time the Treasure Coast Food Bank held a Canstruction® event. Thanks to the efforts of supporters, we secured nearly 3,800 pounds of food that went directly to feeding the hungry in our community. We are hoping our creative and determined teams will surpass that goal during this year’s competition,” said Treasure Coast Food Bank CEO Judith Cruz.

A new twist on this year’s competition is the Treasure Coast Square Mall’s active involvement. Not only are they serving as the venue for the competition, but they are also going to provide promotional support to spread awareness about the event.

“Treasure Coast Square enjoys partnering with non-profit organizations such as the Treasure Coast Food Bank to support important charitable efforts that positively impact the lives of Martin and St. Lucie County residents,” said Sean Carroll, director of marketing and business development at Treasure Coast Square. “We think the Treasure Coast Food Bank Canstruction event is a wonderful way for the mall to tap into the community and support such an impactful cause such as ending hunger.”

This year’s competition will include the South Fork Chapter of Future Builders of America working in partnership with members of the Treasure Coast Builders Association. The second team is the Speed, Power, and Manueverability (S.P.A.M.) Robotics Team 180. The S.P.A.M. Robotics team includes students from Martin County High School, Jensen Beach High School, South Fork High School, Community Christian, the Clark Advanced Learning Center, and members of the homeschool community.

All of the Canstruction® structures will be on display at the Treasure Coast Square Mall in the Old Navy plaza area from Monday, October 13 through Sunday, October 25. Judges will be reviewing the structures and selecting winners in various categories including: design and structural integrity; best meal, best use of labels, jurors’ favorite, honorable mention, and people’s choice award. The Awards Ceremony will take place at Treasure Coast Square on Wednesday, October 15 at 6 p.m.
