How Can I Help My Child Become a Fluent Reader?

We are proud to present the following program as a sponsor of Macaroni Kid Stuart.

Fluent reading helps increase reading comprehension; however, it is important to remember that the purpose of reading is to gain meaning from the text and not just to read fast or to sound pretty. To achieve reading fluency, readers must learn to read smoothly and accurately at a reasonable pace with automaticity, proper phrasing and correct expression.

Confident readers read smoothly because they eliminate hesitations, false starts, repetitions and long pauses as they read. They also read at a pace that is quick enough to simulate real conversation, yet slow enough to allow them to focus on the meaning. Be cautious about using daily timed drills to push children to read faster as it may cause some young readers to guess at words which will divert their attention from carefully reading for meaning. It is more effective to help children learn to read smoothly and accurately by developing automaticity, appropriate phrasing and suitable expression.

Automaticity occurs when readers correctly recognize words without consciously sounding them out. Parents assist with the development of automaticity when they help expand oral vocabulary through conversations with their child and reading aloud to their child. Requiring children to reread familiar text and to practice sight words also helps improve automaticity. Developing automaticity helps to increase accuracy and the rate of reading which will also improve reading comprehension.

Fluent readers successfully group words into proper phrases like “The dog slept - under the table” rather than, word-by-word reading such as “The - dog - slept - under - the – table.” Parents help improve phrasing by modeling as they read aloud. Parents may also demonstrate how to progress from pointing a finger at each word in a sentence to sliding a finger under groups of words in the same sentence. Eventually, replace finger slides with a paper line guide placed beneath each full line of text to determine if your child can group words into proper phrases without using finger pointing.

Competent readers read with expression that imitates how we speak. They attend to punctuation by taking a breath at commas, pausing at periods and using intonation to indicate questions (?) and excitement (!). Parents may encourage expressive reading by recording their child’s reading and letting them listen to how they sound. Then have a discussion with your child about how he or she can improve the reading of specific sentences.

Don’t forget to have fun while helping your child learn to become a Successful Reader!
