Florida TaxWatch Endorses Children’s Services Council Reauthorization

October 24, 2014
Florida TaxWatch on Tuesday endorsed the reauthorization of the Children’s Services Council, which is on the general election ballot this November.

Dominic Calabro, the CEO of the private think tank that examines government spending, wrote in a letter that the public’s return on investment in children and families through the Children’s Services Council is high (read letter in its entirety below).

“Local Children’s Services Councils provide tremendous value and needed services to Florida’s families and is an incredibly good value to taxpayers,” Calabro writes.

The Children’s Services Council of Martin County, along with the independent special districts in St. Lucie, Okeechobee, Palm Beach and Broward counties, are seeking reauthorization of taxing authority by the voters for the first time since originally created by voters.

Since 1988, the Children's Services Council of Martin County has provided a dedicated funding source for children and family programs that stay within Martin County and help only local county residents. For a list of the 19 agencies and 35 programs funded by the Council, log on to www.cscmc.org.

Last week, the Martin County Taxpayers Association endorsed reauthorization of the Children’s Services Council of Martin County during an education forum held at the Blake Library in Stuart. In September, the Stuart News editorial board also endorsed reauthorization.

“Investing in proven prevention programs that include substantial fiscal and programmatic oversight by our staff can result in the long-term health and well-being of our community,” said David Heaton, the executive director of the Children’s Services Council of Martin County. “Transparency and accountability is key.”

Vote For Children

This election cycle has had no shortage of media coverage. Florida voters have been inundated for months with advertising from candidates in highly contested races. Amendment campaigns have been waging and appealing to our hearts and wallets. But among all of the partisan bickering and moral decision making is an easy choice for South Florida voters. When checking your ballot on or before November 4th, I encourage you to choose to support the Florida Children’s Services Councils by reauthorizing them with a yes vote.

After marking your choice for governor, and then congressman, state senator, and representative, takes a closer look at your ballot. Toward the end, you’ll have the opportunity to invest in Florida’s future by reauthorizing the work of your local Children’s Services Council.

Florida’s Children’s Services Councils are independent special districts, established and renewed by local voters. The councils are operated through a dedicated funding stream that they use to ensure children are safe, healthy and happy, beginning in their earliest years.

The Councils help new parents bring healthy children into the world, and give them resources to prevent abuse and neglect. They even provide education services to children and their families, preparing kids for kindergarten and providing afterschool and summer programs to keep kids safe.

Florida’s Children’s Services Councils deserve your vote because they are working hard for Florida’s taxpayers. For every dollar they spend, they manage to provide $5 worth of services as the result of matched dollars.

Already, the return on investment for Floridians is admirable. But the work of the Councils also manages to save taxpayers’ money. Because they are working to improve children’s health, taxpayers spend less on health care. Because they are making sure students are ready to achieve in school, taxpayers spend less on remedial instruction. Because they are helping families build strong and healthy homes, taxpayers spend less on social services and intervention.

Local Children’s Services Councils provide tremendous value and needed services to Florida’s families and an incredibly good value at to taxpayers.

This election cycle, vote yes for children. Vote yes to reauthorize your local Children’s Services Council.
