Macaroni Reads With Ms. Jayme

By Jayme Kostandinu - Children's Assistant, Martin County Library System July 22, 2016
The Martin County Library System’s summer reading program is in full swing, but it’s not too late to stop by your local library to pick up a reading log and earn free books and other prizes. Preschoolers through elementary-aged kids can participate in the children’s summer reading program and teens can submit book reviews to earn volunteer hours and a chance to win a Fitbit. Adults can play too by picking up a bingo card available at all library locations which, when complete, will be entered into a raffle. If you need some suggestions for fun books to keep you or your kids reading over the summer, we can help with that too.

Rick Riordan is back with a new series for all of the Percy Jackson fans out there. He took a detour into Norse mythology with his Magnus Chase series but has returned to the Greek gods in The Trials of Apollo. Apollo has been stripped of his immortality by his father, Zeus, and must learn to survive as a human in the modern world. This will be a five part series that will revisit many of the characters from both the Percy Jackson and the Olympians and the Heroes of Olympus series.

Nine years after what was to be the final installment in the Harry Potter series was released, a new book by J.K. Rowling is coming. On July 31, 2016, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will hit the shelves. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child takes place 19 years after the conclusion of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The print book will be the script of the stage play of the same name premiering in London on July 30th. The play is based on an original story by Rowling featuring Harry as a married father of three working for the Ministry of Magic. While there are no concrete plans for a movie, Warner Bros, the studio that produced the other Harry Potter films, has filed for a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child trademark. The play as well as the book is recommended for ages 10 and up.

Kids can also get their summer reading in by listening to audiobooks which are perfect for family road trips. Both the Harry Potter and Percy Jackson books are a delight to listen to and appropriate and riveting for a wide range of family members.
