The Martin County School District was pleased to host State Board of Education member, Michael Olenick, to Martin County on Friday, July 8, 2016. Mr. Olenick along with Superintendent Laurie Gaylord and Deputy Superintendent Ginger Featherstone were able to visit the Summer Reading Camp being held at Crystal Lake Elementary.

“We were honored to have Mr. Olenick visit our Summer Reading Camp. The students have worked hard this summer and it was valuable to visit their classrooms and observe their development over the past four weeks. We are delighted anytime we are able to host someone from the state level to showcase the important work being done by our students, teachers and administrators,” says Laurie J. Gaylord, Superintendent.

The Summer Reading Camp was held  for students in first and third grades. The Florida Department of Education requires  third grade summer reading camp for students scoring Level one on the English Language Arts portion of the Florida Standards Assessment. Third grade students are given additional time and intensive instruction to address reading deficiencies. The third grade camp concludes with the administration of the Iowa Test of Basic Skills to assist in student progression decisions.. This year, the District offered a first grade camp to students who would benefit from additional time and instruction in the area of phonics, phonological awareness and oral language. Literacy coaches helped to determine criteria and curriculum to ensure greater success in the area of phonological awareness and phonics. Approximately, 200 students participated in the camp.
