Last fall, Piper’s Landing Garden Club held an essay contest for students at Palm City Elementary School. The winner was awarded a one-week scholarship to Wekivia Youth Camp, a sleep-away nature camp near Orlando run by the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs. Fourth grade student Mallory Schweitzer was the lucky winner, and in early July members of Piper’s Landing Garden Club gave her an official celebratory send-off, with the goal of sharing their love of nature with our future generation.

The Piper’s Landing Garden Club coordinated the sponsorship with Palm City Elementary School, specifically with Science Teacher Mrs. Bullock, Principal Mrs. Marin and Guidance Counselor Ms. Freese, to evaluate and select a student who would most benefit from Wekiva Youth Camp. Students were asked to submit an essay detailing why they wanted to attend Wekiva Youth Camp. Mallory was the first student to submit her application and was soon selected as the recipient of the youth camp sponsorship.

“As summer drew near, we all eagerly anticipated the camp and the adventure that Mallory would soon embark upon,” said Elaine Matts, member of Piper’s Landing Garden Club. “Finally, the big day arrived and we sent Mallory off with hugs, a few fun gifts, and lots of joyful wishes. We now look forward to her return so she can share with us all of the knowledge she acquired during the week she attended this very special and unique camp.“

Wekiva is a sleep away nature camp, located within Wekiva Springs State Park in Central Florida, designed to instill a love and respect for Florida’s natural environment through education, conservation and preservation. The Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, of which Piper’s Landing Garden Club is a member, sponsors Wekiva, making it the camp of choice for garden club sponsorships statewide.
